Privacy Policy

Last updated: 8 June 2026

Japan from Australia ("we", "us", "our") is an independent travel resource operated under Kairn. We respect your privacy and handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

This policy explains what we collect, why, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have. It covers both information we currently collect and collection we have planned as the site grows.

What we collect

  • Analytics data. We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site. This includes usage data such as pages viewed, time on page, approximate location (derived from a truncated IP address), and device and browser type. GA4 sets cookies and similar identifiers in your browser. We have IP anonymisation enabled and do not use this data to identify you personally.
  • Newsletter email (planned). Where we offer an email newsletter or updates, we collect the email address you choose to provide, so we can send the content you have asked for. This is opt-in, and every email includes an unsubscribe link.
  • Messages you send us. If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and whatever you include in your message, so we can respond.
  • Affiliate link interactions. Some pages contain affiliate links. When you click one, the third-party merchant or affiliate network may set its own cookies and record that the visit came from us, so any resulting purchase can be attributed. We do not receive your payment details. See our Terms of Use for how affiliate links work.

We do not knowingly collect sensitive information, and we do not sell personal information.

How we use your information

We use the information we collect to:

  • operate, maintain and improve the site and its content;
  • understand which guides are useful and where to focus;
  • send newsletter content you have opted in to receive;
  • respond to your enquiries, corrections and feedback; and
  • attribute affiliate referrals and meet our reporting obligations to affiliate partners.

Cookies and third-party services

The site relies on third-party services that may set cookies or collect data under their own privacy policies, including:

  • Google Analytics — analytics. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Affiliate networks and merchants — referral tracking when you click an affiliate link.
  • Our hosting and content delivery providers — to serve the site securely.

You can control or block cookies through your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies will not affect your ability to read the site.

Disclosure and overseas recipients

We do not sell your personal information. We may share limited information with the service providers listed above so they can perform their functions on our behalf.

Some of these providers (for example, Google and affiliate networks) store and process data on servers located outside Australia, including in the United States. Where information is disclosed to overseas recipients, we take reasonable steps consistent with APP 8 to ensure it is handled appropriately.

Security

We take reasonable steps to protect the personal information we hold from misuse, interference, loss, and unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Accessing and correcting your information

Under the APPs you may request access to the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate, out of date or incomplete. Email us using the details below and we will respond within a reasonable period. If you have subscribed to our newsletter, you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email.

Complaints

If you believe we have breached the Australian Privacy Principles, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.

Children

The site is intended for a general adult audience planning travel. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or legal obligations. The "last updated" date above shows when it was last revised. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
